I'm not going to beat around the bush. I promised you a report on the long range wireless solution I talked about in my last post (1.5 mile wireless: You can do that?), and here it is; It seems to be a complete success!
I installed the pair of long-range wireless-N directional antennas at about 1/3 mile distance, with line of site, late this fall. The small business has been using the internet connection with little trouble for several months now. None of the hiccups they have experienced have been attributed to the long range wireless setup. The connection seems stable and I consistently test the internet speeds between 10 and 20 Mbps, depending mostly on whether I'm connected to the local network via wired or wireless connection (The long range wireless connection supplies internet to the business's wired network, and is re-broadcasted using a second router to provide conventional wifi access).
So, for those of you who have remote locations with seemingly no high-speed internet options, long range wireless-n may be an affordable solution. Feel free to contact me for more info if you need help setting up a solution like this.

The small business utilizing the long range wireless to gain internet access to a remote location is called The Vineyard at Grandview, a "growing", successful new vineyard and winery in the beautiful rolling hills of Central Pennsylvania. In full disclosure, I happen to have somewhat of a special interest in the business: The owners are my parents, two sisters and their husbands.
